Footage has surfaced online of the moment a new homeowner discovered a hidden door to a secret basement below her apartment.

A U.K.-based TikTok user posting as Erin Cloudy shared footage of the discovery to social media in a clip that has been watched over 89.7 million times already.

“I bought a 200 year old flat and found a hidden door under the stairs,” a caption accompanying the video reads. You can watch the footage here.

The discovery of a hidden room in any property is not only an exciting development, it can also add significant value.

Speaking to Mansion Global, Rochelle Atlas Maize, a leading luxury realtor based out of Beverly Hills, explained: “There’s a James Bond feel to them, and they’re always a conversation piece when it comes to the resale of the property.”

Cloudy certainly sounds excited about her discovery, even if she does sound ever so slightly creeped out by it on her TikTok video.

In the clip a woman, thought to be Cloudy, can be heard describing the discovery. “Under the stairs we knocked through,” she explains. “Look through the hole and it’s a f***ing staircase.”

Sure enough, the camera revealed that, just underneath the staircase, where usually the space would come to an abrupt end, another set of stairs and a doorway is visible. The lower half of the door appears to be missing while the entrance itself leads to a space underneath what they thought was the ground floor of the apartment.

Evidently creeped out by the discovery, Cloudy spends much of the video urging the man who is with her not to “make noises” to add any further eerie vibes to the situation.

Despite this, Cloudy and her male companion eventually decide to go down for a closer look, wearing masks and gloves for safety. The clip ends with them just about to explore beyond the doorway.

Watching on TikTok, one viewer described it as “the beginning of every horror movie” while another commented: “I’ve watched too much true crime cause my brain was instantly like ‘previous owner hid a body and boarded it up.'”

Some were instantly reminded of a recent horror film hit. “Fingers crossed this doesn’t end up like the movie Barbarian,” one user wrote. Written and directed by Zach Cregger, Barbarian centers on a seemingly ordinary rental property that harbors a dark and violent secret deep within its basement. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t end well for those who enter.

Not everyone was quite so spooked out, of course. Others shared similar experiences and there was even a suggestion that whatever space they do find down there might belong to them. “I knew someone who rented a house in Brixton, and one of the cellar walls fell down revealing a secret room behind which only had a locked cabinet in,” one user wrote with another adding: “My brother bought a flat in an old building, found similar and there is a law that if a certain percentage is below your flat you own the space.”

Most, however, were simply desperate to see what Cloudy discovered down there. She saved that footage for a follow-up video revealing a spacious, albeit slightly grimy, basement space underneath that she believes is “as big as” their apartment. You can watch that clip here.

“So my flat is ‘basement flat’ there has been no mention of anything underneath me, verbally or on the deeds,” she wrote alongside the video. Though some were still urging her to “seal it up” and go on with her lives, it sounds like Cloudy is going to be investigating a little more before then.

Stay tuned for further updates.
