The yellow-eyed wolfdog that was causing concern among residents of Sebastopol, California, has been found and successfully reunited with his owner.

North Bay Animal Services, part of the rescue effort, shared the news on its Facebook page: “We have the best update for you! Shadow the wolfdog has been caught and is back home safe and sound!”

Residents were initially put on high alert earlier in the week when a yellow-eyed wolfdog hybrid was reported on the loose in the area. The Sebastopol Police Department, in collaboration with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Animal Control launched a search operation to locate the animal.

Thanks to the team of Animal Control officers in the area, Shadow, his owner, and pack members Max and Sky were successfully reunited.

“A big shoutout and thank you to the vigilant community members who reported sightings of Shadow,” North Bay Animal Services said. “Your alertness and cooperation made all the difference in bringing Shadow back to where he belongs.”

There was widespread concern earlier in the week when residents were told not to approach the animal for fears that he may be dangerous, while descriptions of “yellow eyes” and a large frame caused concern among the community.

Multiple sightings of Shadow were reported to the authorities and credited with eventually helping to track down the pet, who was clearly delighted to be reunited with his family.

The announcement that the dog and his owner had been reunited was met with relief and gratitude in the local community.

“This is the best news,” said one commenter on the Facebook post.

Another commenter said: “I love a happy ending!”

One community member shared the relief that many were feeling and wrote: “Thanks for keeping us all updated throughout. Lots of people have been following this story and are breathing sighs of relief to know Shadow is home safe with his family.”

“Great work everyone. Thank you for showing kindness and concern for Shadow. The best outcome ever,” said another.

The rules around owning a wolfdog hybrid vary in the U.S. between state, county and city, but it is legal to own a wolf hybrid in California as long as they are the second generation down from wolf ancestors.

“This beautiful reunion shows the incredible impact we can achieve when we all work together for the well-being of our four-legged friends,” North Bay Animal Services said. “Thank you for being a part of this incredible community that cares for its animals.”
