‘Someone Is Breaking in’—Pet Cam Captures What Really Woke Woman Up at 2 A.M.

A woman who awoke one night convinced “someone is breaking in” has revealed what she saw when she checked on her pet cam.

In a video posted to TikTok under the handle uh.kimmygray, she showed how her initial feelings of shock and surprise at hearing noises downstairs quickly shifted to amusement when she discovered the true source of the disturbance: her cats.

As many as five cats can be seen tearing around her living room on the clip, which was filmed at 2 A.M. and, perhaps understandably, sparked concern for the homeowner.

Little did she know her cats would wake up and choose violence. At least one of the cats in the clip appears to be dragging what was later revealed to be a pop-up tent with several of the felines filmed in the video seemingly doing circuits around the living room and hallway. Writing in the caption of another video posted to the account, the pet owner said that her only reaction to seeing the footage at the time was to utter the words: “holy moly.”

That’s a fair response. After all, cats are notorious for sleeping away much of the day, so the sight of them darting around at such an unsociable hour is a confusing one—if not unheard of. There may be some explanation though.

While studies suggest cats are capable of sleeping up to 17 hours a day, these sleep cycles tend to only last between 50 and 110 minutes at a time.

It’s also worth remembering that while cats are not nocturnal animals, they are crepuscular, meaning they are most active around the hours of dawn and dusk.

Dr David Sands, an expert in animal psychology, explained to the BBC Science Focus: “This is because, over millions of years, cats have evolved to be low-light predators, with their eyesight specifically adapted for activity at twilight.”

Now 2 a.m. may not be a time anywhere close to being dawn or dusk but it’s perfectly feasible that some low-level light in the room may have given the cats the impression this was the case. Of course, this is all just a theory. What’s certain is that the clip has generated a pretty significant response on social media.

At the time of writing, the clip of the gang of cats running riot has been watched over 1.1 million times, generating over 1,200 comments from bemused viewers in the process.

“When I read cats I was expecting two and then the gang came out I was dying,” one viewer wrote. A second commenting on the way they tore around the corner while doing their laps said: “They all looked like nascar drivers hitting that drift” with a third writing: “LMAO THE WAY THEY COME FLYING AROUND THE CORNER LIKE A MARIO CART”

It was clear some had watched the video multiple times too. “This gets funnier each time I watch it,” one such viewer said with another agreeing: “I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this…it gets better and better.”
