Every student past and present knows that studying can have its dull moments.

But fortunately for one class in South Africa, student Timothy Morrell took matters into his own hands by adding a live musical performance to his Financial Accounting lecture. Morrell wanted to brighten the mood for his fellow classmates, so he spoke with his teacher about surprising everyone with a singalong at the end of the session.

Of course, Morrell, 19, didn’t want to be the only person singing, so he told Newsweek that he “planted four friends throughout the lecture hall,” to encourage more people to join in and unleash their inner pop star.

“We went in and told the class that I was going to play music, and that they could follow along with the lyrics,” he said. “At first, everyone was apprehensive, but eventually people joined in, and it ended up being a magical moment for us as a class, and for the university altogether.”

Tim Morrell pictured getting up in class and starting a singalong. The video has gone viral on TikTok, as many people praised Morrell’s confidence to get up and sing.

To say it was a success would be an understatement, as Morrell managed to get every member of the class up on their feet. In just a few short moments, the class went from a sleepy silence to a full-blown concert atmosphere that nobody will forget any time soon.

Morrell was certainly proud of his achievement, and he shared footage from the class on his TikTok account (@timmorrel), adding that the ending was so “worth it.” The clip has delighted many, gaining more than 30.3 million views and 4.1 million likes in just a matter of weeks.

Despite being “worried that nobody was going to join in,” it turns out that Morrell’s fears were futile because the plan worked out exactly as he hoped they would.

Morrell, who is studying human life science, told Newsweek: “The social media reaction has been mind blowing, and the video has been seen across the world. I’ve had such an influx of encouraging messages because so many people found joy in my videos.

“There has definitely been a buzz of excitement on campus since we published the videos. Everyone else wants us to come to their lectures now, and we do plan on making a comeback in the first week of the new term.”

While the singalong provided everyone with a lighter moment at the end of class, Morrell hoped that it would inspire people to “make the most of each day,” and to see that even the most mundane moment can be joyful.

Since the video of Morrell “bringing vibes to lectures” went viral, it’s amassed more than 18,900 comments already. One TikTok user wrote: “Okay, but I need to know what class/module this is?”

Another person responded: “Nah this is [actually] incredible. The confidence to do this is crazy.”

While another comment reads: “Straight out of High School Musical.”
