A college senior has sparked interest after sharing pictures of his unusually decorated dorm room, which his parents affectionately likened to an “antiques shop.”
Lucas, a senior at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York, describes himself as a lover of “primitive antiques.”
Expressing his passion, he has adorned his dorm room with a collection of vintage pitchers, old bottles and period-style prints.
“I’m interested in antiques and colonial culture, and I just love how ‘homey’ and cozy it makes an otherwise sparse dorm room feel,” Lucas told Newsweek.

Most of Lucas’ collection comes from local antique stores in Geneva, where he frequently browses for inspiration. “I don’t always buy things, but I poke around different stores pretty frequently for inspiration,” he said.
Despite his parents’ initial jest about the decor, Lucas took the comment in his stride. “My reaction was honestly laughter,” he said. “My parents are very supportive, and I know they appreciate that I’m just being me, even if that may look a little odd to others.”

Lucas believes his dorm room reflects his passion for history without detracting from his modern lifestyle. “For the most part, yes. My dorm is filled with antiques, but I also think that I can be and act like a modern 22-year-old, even if I like things from the past,” he explained.
After his parents pointed out the uniqueness of the decor, Lucas was inspired to share pictures of his space on Reddit’s r/malelivingspace subreddit, with the caption: “22M, my parents say my dorm feels like an antiques shop.”
The post quickly gained traction, with more than 11,000 upvotes and over 1,000 comments that seemed to align with Lucas’ parents’ view.

One user remarked: “They are not wrong,” while another commented: “It looks like time stood still here. Really cool if you ask me though.” Others appreciated the cozy ambiance, with one user comparing it to a Van Gogh painting and dubbing it “Antique Chic.”
Lucas was thrilled at the positive response that came from sharing his unique dorm decor.
“I love sharing about my passions and interests, and I thought, ‘I’ve got an interesting dorm, let’s see how others perceive it,'” he said.
