It is the spinoff TV series the world has been waiting for and has finally been confirmed. Suits is making a comeback—kind of.
NBC has revealed the legal drama will be getting a fresh version, this time set in Los Angeles, months after the original series found renewed dizzying success after landing on Netflix. The spinoff has indeed landed a pilot order!
Suits: LA is to be the next spinoff from the Suits universe and helmed by original show runner, Aaron Korsh, who previously told Newsweek he’d written the L.A.-based show “several years after Suits ended.”
Korsh was adamant Suits: LA “was conceived of as its own show, not as a Suits spinoff, so it has a standalone premise for its existence.” He wrote it this way so that it could appeal to any viewer whether they had watched Suits or not.
Bonnie Hammer, vice chairman at NBCUniversal, agreed.
“I don’t know if I would look at it as a spin-off but rather an extension of whatever Suits could be in today’s world… Aaron’s one of the few people who could really pull it off and it would feel authentic to this time,” she told Newsweek in November 2023.
The new show follows Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor from New York, who has undergone a reinvention and is now representing powerful people in L.A.
“His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career,” the show’s description reads.
“Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved.”
Suits first premiered on USA Network in 2011 and ran for nine relatively successful seasons. The show blew up when it landed on Netflix in mid-2023 where it racked up 45 billion viewing minutes in a matter of months. It also broke a Nielsen streaming chart record by claiming the top spot for 12 consecutive weeks, and despite being knocked off temporarily by Virgin River, it quickly returned to number one.
The show did attempt one spinoff, Pearson which followed the firm’s managing partner Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres), but that only enjoyed a short-lived run with one season.
Even though Suits: LA is not directly connected to the original show, Korsh confirmed there was “a possibility, always, of Suits characters turning up here or there” in the new series.
Furthermore, fans of Suits can expect the same addictive tone in Suits: LA including the trademark wit, character building and optimistic worldview.
“Whether it has the same characters in it or not, I have a certain tone and style and voice that will have a lot of overlap [with Suits],” Korsh told Newsweek, explaining why the show has been described as being “in the Suits world” rather than being a direct spinoff. “When it says ‘in the Suits world,’ to me it just means Suits exists in the present day of America. And this is a show that exists with a very similar tone and in the same America, in a different location.”
