Hearts have melted online after a ginger cat was caught on camera comforting the family’s black-and-white foster kitten during an illness.

In a video with more than 1.2 million views on TikTok, the ginger cat offers comfort to the young kitten, whom they suspect is battling a serious illness. Posted by user @moyer3 on November 30, the footage has warmed hearts, thanks to the compassionate nature of the feline’s reaction to a little cat in need.

In the video, a text overlay read: “The white kitten is our foster kitten and is really sick and not doing well.

“We think she might have Feline Infectious Peritonitis, which is exactly what our orange cat was diagnosed with. Which can be very fatal especially in young kittens,” the text added.

Despite the grim circumstances, the footage captured the orange cat tenderly comforting and cuddling the unwell foster kitten. “It’s like he knows,” said the poster.

What Is Feline Infectious Peritonitis?

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a viral disease caused by certain strains of the feline coronavirus, and it is particularly dangerous for young cats.

FIP comes in two main forms: effusive (wet) and non-effusive (dry), with the former being more common and progressing rapidly. While FIP was once considered untreatable, recent advancements have introduced antiviral drugs, though their long-term effectiveness remains uncertain.

Symptoms of FIP can vary, but most commonly include lethargy, decreased appetite, weight loss, fluctuating fever, breathing difficulties, seizures, excessive thirst and urination, vomiting and jaundice.

Owners who suspect their cat may be suffering from FIP should seek veterinary attention promptly. While diagnosis isn’t straightforward, your veterinarian may conduct various tests, such as blood analysis, X-rays, and fluid analysis.

If they suspect FIP, a qualified veterinarian will be able to advise on the best course of action for your pet’s health and condition.

Steph shared a heartbreaking memory, writing, “We lost our kitten to FIP a few years ago. Broke my heart. We ordered the meds but it was too late. Praying you get them soon.”

Laura, another viewer, wrote: “Now I’m crying. Orange baby is comforting black and white baby. I hope she pulls through.”

Tammy posted: “Cats are so smart. People don’t give them enough credit for their intelligence. They have such huge hearts as well.”
