Newsweek, in partnership with Statista, recently published its second annual ranking of America’s Best Fertility Clinics.

The top 125 facilities on the 2024 ranking were evaluated via four pillars, including a nationwide survey of physicians and fertility medicine professionals, key performance indicators and success rates, accreditations and patient reviews.

Statista analysts Philipp Strehle and Rafaela Wasserer said this ranking serves as a “valuable tool” for prospective patients to make informed decisions about which facility will best serve their needs. Accessibility is also crucial, especially for patients who may need to travel for fertility services.

“Knowing which top clinics are available in different regions of the country allows individuals to weigh factors such as travel distance, accommodation options and logistical considerations when selecting a clinic,” they said.

The following list spotlights the top 12 fertility clinics in the northeast region of the United States, including Maine, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

This list details the areas where these top clinics excel, according to Statista’s survey, as well as Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) metrics published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). ART includes all fertility treatments in which either eggs or embryos are handled, like in vitro fertilization (IVF). The most recent ART data is from 2021, according to the CDC.

1. Weill Cornell Medicine Center for Reproductive Medicine — New York, NY

This facility has been helping patients in New York since 1988. There are three locations in Manhattan, as well as locations in Brooklyn, Westchester County and on Long Island. It is ranked No. 1 overall on the list for the second year in a row and is the top facility in the northeast and in New York.

On the survey, the clinic had a high reputation score and a solid ART metrics performance. The clinic provides a range of services related to donor eggs, donated embryos, embryo cryopreservation, egg cryopreservation and gestational carrier services. According to the 2021 ART report from the CDC, the clinic had 6,543 total cycles. Those cycles resulted in 1,506 pregnancies, 1,213 deliveries and 1,274 infants born.

Dr. Zev Rosenwaks is the director of the Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. He has been working in the IVF space for over 40 years.

“We provide care for thousands of patients annually, offering contemporary diagnostic techniques and the latest clinical treatments for all issues related to reproductive disorders and infertility,” Rosenwaks told Newsweek over email. “Our comprehensive services are delivered by 15 board-certified reproductive endocrinologists and reproductive surgeons, alongside world-class scientists overseeing our embryology, endocrinology, andrology and pre-implantation genetics laboratories.”

The team at Weill Cornell also includes psychologists, genetic counselors, highly trained reproductive medicine nurses, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, Rosenwaks said.

In terms of research and technology, Weill Cornell is developing novel diagnostic techniques to assess both female and male infertility, including the elucidation of genetic disorders associated with sperm production. The clinic’s scientists are also developing methods to generate sperm and eggs from stem cells.

“We meticulously coordinate all aspects of third-party reproduction, including gestational carrier, egg donation, fertility preservation and sperm donation, prioritizing safety and care,” Rosenwaks said. “Our physicians and scientists have and continue to pursue cutting-edge research in efforts to advance the field of reproductive medicine and patient care. Additionally, basic physiological questions are investigated in efforts to develop new treatment modalities for infertility and reproductive disorders.”

2. Columbia University Fertility Center — New York, NY

Columbia University’s Fertility Center was ranked No. 2 overall on the ranking, up from the No. 4 spot last year. There are two locations, one at Columbus Circle in Manhattan and one in White Plains, New York.

Some of its treatments include egg freezing and embryo baking, fertility testing, IV intrauterine insemination (IUI), LGBTQ fertility services, pre-pregnancy genetics programs, pre-implantation genetic testing and third-party reproduction.

On the survey, the clinic did well on both the reputation score and the ART metrics performance.

According to the 2021 ART data, the Columbia University Fertility Clinic offers donor egg, donated embryo, embryo and egg cryopreservation and gestational carrier services. In 2021, there were 3,281 total cycles, resulting in 665 pregnancies, 564 deliveries and 574 total infants born.

Dr. Zev Williams is an OB/GYN, the chief of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Division of Columbia and the director of Columbia University Fertility Center.

Besides having an aesthetically beautiful center and state-of-the-art equipment and novel technologies, Williams said what sets Columbia apart is the people and the culture. He said the staff shares the values of ABI, or “Always Be Improving,” to make care more successful and less stressful for patients.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have a diverse team with different backgrounds, training skill sets, but truly a shared passion and dedication to our core mission, which is helping to bring life and joy to the world,” he told Newsweek.

To help enable the culture of constant improvement, Williams points to the research and development lab within the clinic that has made recent advancements to render the fertility process easier for patients.

For example, Columbia’s researchers developed a way for patients to take blood samples at home without a needle that uses one-tenth the amount of blood normally taken and that can be used for the entirety of the fertility journey. Additionally, the clinic developed a way for men to collect sperm samples at home.

Overall, the staff at Columbia University’s Fertility Center are focused on giving what Williams calls “beyond amazing care,” a term he said came from a past patient’s review of the clinic’s services.

“‘Beyond amazing’ for us means looking at the experience and asking, ‘How do we elevate it?’ How do we make the patient feel not just that the technical stuff was done perfectly, but it was done in a way that showed kindness and empathy and warmth every little step along the way?” he said.

3. NYU Langone Fertility Center — New York, NY

NYU Langone is third in the northeast and ranked fifth overall on the list, up from the No. 8 spot last year. It has two locations in Manhattan and one in Westchester County.

The facility specializes in IVF and egg freezing and has performed more than 3,000 freezing and 300 thawing procedures, resulting in more than 200 live births, according to its website.

In the survey, NYU Langone had “strong” patient satisfaction and ART metrics performances. According to the CDC’s ART metrics, the clinic provides donor egg services, embryo and egg cryopreservation and gestational carrier services. There were 4,691 total cycles in 2021, which resulted in 1,079 pregnancies, 921 deliveries and 939 total infants born.

Dr. James Grifo, the director of the NYU Langone Fertility Center, told Newsweek that egg freezing and egg donations have become a large part of the clinic services. He said NYU Langone is part of MyEggBank—one of the largest egg donor banks in the country.

NYU Langone also works on pre-implantation genetic testing. Grifo said the clinic also tests for single-gene disorders, testing patients for 566 recessive gene mutations that cause genetic diseases in babies and preventing those diseases in newborns.

“We keep changing and getting better and that results in better experience for the patients and better results,” he said. “It’s a constant thirst for knowledge, it’s a constant desire to succeed and get better.”

According to the Statista survey, NYU Langone scored well on the patient satisfaction metric. Grifo said that he and several other staff members at the clinic have been through fertility treatments themselves. He said this makes the staff sensitive to patients’ situations.

“We’re in the service business where we have to make patients comfortable,” he said. “Every person working here understands that we have to help patients through a tough time. We have to be empathetic, we have to work hard to help solve the problems that they are facing, understand them, listen to them and help them through that journey.”

4. Brigham and Women’s Hospital Center for Infertility and Reproductive Surgery – Boston, MA

Brigham and Women’s Hospital Center for Infertility and Reproductive Surgery (CIRS) is the top fertility clinic in Massachusetts and the sixth clinic on the ranking overall. Last year, it was ranked No. 3 overall.

“Our mission is to help people build their families, with a personalized and compassionate approach that is patient-centered,” Dr. Mark Hornstein, the director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said in an email to Newsweek. “We’re proud to be recognized as a top best fertility clinic in the country and thankful to our clinical team for their dedication each and every day to our patients and their families.”

CIRS offers a range of procedures and services to treat infertility, including IVF, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, IVF with donor eggs and intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Their physicians also perform minimally invasive and robot-assisted gynecological surgery for reproductive disorders including myomectomy, endometriosis treatment and tubal ligation reversal.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital has its own nationally certified, full-service labs for testing and specialized capabilities like embryo freezing. It received a high reputation score and a strong ART metrics performance on Statista’s survey.

According to the CDC’s ART data, the clinic had 2,816 total cycles in 2021, resulting in 931 pregnancies, 767 deliveries and 828 infants born.

“I’m proud of our dedicated team, whose empathetic, careful care has helped so many families grow,” Dr. Nawal Nour, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, told Newsweek in an email. “Together, they provide high quality, patient-centric care, harnessing the latest innovation and science in the field on behalf of our patients.”

5. Massachusetts General Hospital Fertility Center – Boston, MA

Mass General’s fertility clinic is the second top clinic in Massachusetts and retains its No. 10 spot on the overall list.

The clinic features several services, including LGBTQ family-building, IVF and ART, third-party reproduction, a fibroid program, a clinic specializing in reproductive health and cancer, pre-implantation genetic testing and cryopreservation.

According to the Statista survey, Mass General had a positive assessment of treatment of fertility problems among its peers and a solid ART metrics performance.

The clinic covers egg and embryo cryopreservation, gestational carrier and donor egg services. It had 1,762 total cycles in 2021, which resulted in 550 pregnancies, 455 deliveries and 487 infants born.

Dr. John Petrozza is the head of Mass General’s Division of Reproductive Medicine and IVF and the director of the Massachusetts General Fertility Clinic.

Mass General’s fertility center employs “extremely skilled reproductive surgeons” who help with IVF and IUI cycles, Petrozza said. He credits the clinic’s “great success rates” with its excellent lab that works on fertilizing eggs and creating embryos.

“We have great pregnancy rates, we have great live birth rates, we’ve kept our number of multiple pregnancies low, which is another parameter that we focus on a lot,” he told Newsweek.

Mass General is part of an academic system that includes a partnership with Harvard University’s medical school and is researching how artificial intelligence can be used to help embryo selection and how to better monitor hormones to track ovarian function.

Once patients visit the Mass General Fertility Clinic, Petrozza said the staff will “inundate them with more information than they’ll probably ever want to read or see.”

“It’s important because we want them to fully understand the process because there’s a lot of moving parts when someone starts a treatment, and we want them to fully understand their diagnosis, why the treatment plan was chosen for them, and we want them to be involved in that decision-making,” he said.

6. RMA New Jersey Basking Ridge – Basking Ridge, NJ

The Reproductive Medicine Associates (RMA) office in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, is the top fertility clinic in the state and the 11th-best clinic on the ranking overall. Since the previous ranking, this clinic has moved up six spots from No. 17.

The RMA network includes 28 fertility clinics in several states, including California, Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington.

According to the CDC’s ART data, there were 10,805 total cycles performed at the clinics that resulted in 3,520 pregnancies, 2,986 deliveries and 3,017 infants born.

RMA Basking Ridge Medical Director Dr. Thomas Molinaro is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist, obstetrician and gynecologist, as well as a clinical assistant professor for the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

“Our practice has a long history of trying to advance the science of reproductive medicine, and I think that’s what’s really set us apart,” he told Newsweek. “At the focus of what we do every single day is, ‘How do we help our patients achieve more success?'”

He said RMA Basking Ridge has pioneered a lot of the technology that’s used around the world regarding growing embryos longer, pre-implantation genetic testing of embryos and single embryo transfer.

“I believe that the technology and the access to care will only grow over time—whatever rules or restrictions come into play, I think we’ll always find a way to make sure that patients get taken care of,” he said. “There’s a lot of opportunity in the future to be able to do IVF better and help more patients be more successful. I count myself fortunate every single day that I get to help families have children, and I think the future is really, really bright.”

To help patients with the often long and emotional journey, Molinaro said RMA Basking Ridge has patient navigators who keep up with patients at certain touch points so that the clinic can provide extra support when needed.

7. Boston IVF – The Waltham Fertility Center – Waltham, MA

Boston IVF at the Waltham Fertility Center is the third ranked in Massachusetts and the 16th facility overall.

The clinic offers egg and embryo donor services, egg and embryo cryopreservation and gestational carrier services. On the Statista survey, Boston IVF performed well on patient satisfaction.

They had 8,522 total cycles in 2021, which resulted in 2,515 pregnancies, 2,131 deliveries and 2,226 infants born, according to the CDC’s ART data.

David Stern has been the CEO of Boston IVF since 2020. The network was founded in 1986 and has 12 IVF labs, 20 offices, 40 physicians and over 600 employees in 11 different states—mostly concentrated in New England and upstate New York. Boston IVF is affiliated with Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, with which they have a fellowship program.

At Waltham, Stern said the clinic does a lot of research into genetic testing and works with companies on new technologies in the artificial intelligence space to improve patient analysis.

Despite the large network, Stern said Boston IVF clinics offer a personalized approach. Each patient has a specific doctor who works with a team of nurses, medical assistants and a financial coordinator.

“All the treatment is done just by that one doctor who knows them and they go through the journey with them, so it’s very individualized, personalized care,” Stern told Newsweek. “That’s probably one of the most important things about the overall patient experience.”

8. University of Pennsylvania – Penn Fertility Care – Philadelphia, PA

Penn Fertility Care is the top fertility clinic in the state of Pennsylvania and the 28th overall on the ranking, down two spots from last year.

Penn had a positive assessment of fertility counseling among their peers who participated in the Statista survey.

In 2021, there were 1,897 total cycles performed, 505 pregnancies, 420 deliveries and 446 infants born, according to the CDC ART data.

In the northeast, New York, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware and New Jersey offer IVF and fertility preservation insurance coverage, while Massachusetts offers only IVF coverage, according to Resolve: The National Infertility Association. Pennsylvania currently does not require employers to offer fertility insurance coverage. According to Penn Fertility Care’s website, the facility accepts most insurance plans and will assist patients in obtaining proper authorization and referral for treatment. There are full-time financial counselors also available to help patients navigate insurance coverage and choose the best options for everyone’s situation.

9. CCRM New York City Fertility Clinic – New York, NY

The CCRM New York Fertility Clinic is the fourth-best clinic in New York. It is the No. 36 clinic on the overall list, jumping up eight spots since last year’s list. This is one of 37 locations of the Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine (CCRM) across 16 major metropolitan areas in the U.S. and Canada.

According to the survey, CCRM New York City was given a positive peer assessment for its ability to diagnosis fertility problems and had a solid ART metrics performance. In 2021, it had 1,936 total cycles resulting in 337 pregnancies, 301 deliveries and 312 infants born, according to CDC ART data.

CCRM NYC

CCRM New York City

Dr. Arielle Bayer is a reproductive endocrinologist, infertility specialist and board-certified OBGYN at CCRM New York City. She told Newsweek that the combination of very personal patient care, a “world-class” IVF lab with the latest technology and an “incredible team” working on innovations behind the scenes makes the clinic so successful.

“You’re not going to come in and just get a cookie-cutter recipe,” she said. “It’s very individualized and thoughtful treatment.”

Being part of the larger CCRM network allows each clinic’s labs to have the most innovative advanced technologies and cutting edge research, Bayer said, adding that “the level of the quality control of every single thing that happens in our lab is second to none.”

To help patients through the often long and emotional process of fertility treatments, CCRM New York City offers an ongoing conversation about patient mental health through partnerships with therapists, social workers and psychiatrists when needed.

“It should feel like a given part of the journey,” Bayer said. “The mental health of the patient should be holistically treated along with the rest of the fertility part because it can be very long and very stressful.”

10. Boston IVF – The Portland Fertility Center – Portland, ME

This is the second Boston IVF location on the list. Last year, the Portland, Maine, facility was included in the ranking’s lower 50 clinics, but it has now moved up to the No. 38 spot overall.

The Portland location performs egg and embryo donations, egg and embryo cryopreservation and gestational carrier services. They had 243 pregnancies, 212 deliveries and 225 infants born from 773 total cycles in 2021, according to CDC ART data. The ART metrics performance and high accreditation score set the Portland clinic apart on the Statista survey.

Boston IVF CEO Stern said the network has one of the top live birth rates in the U.S. and focuses on the quality of its lab when creating embryos. Boston IVF is also the only IVF center certified by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in North America—meaning it relies on the quality controls from doctor protocols, laboratory procedures and key performances indicators.

“That quality helps us deliver the best patient care,” Stern told Newsweek.

Boston IVF also has a Wellness Center where patients can receive acupuncture treatments and talk with counselors, social workers and dietitians. The clinic also sends out patient surveys and offers patient advocates to respond to the needs and concerns of patients to improve all aspects of care and ensure patients have the best experience possible, Stern said.

“It’s very difficult, emotionally, for patients,” Stern said. “We recognize that and we try to deal with this in a very humanistic way. It’s not a failure, it’s very common, infertility. Sometimes people just need a bit of additional help to have a baby.”

No matter which Boston IVF location a patient visits, Stern said the lab protocols are standardized and done the same way.

The main difference geographically, he added, is the insurance coverage for different procedures. If patients are in a state that does not offer coverage for IVF treatments, Boston IVF will enlist a financial counselor to help.

11. CCRM Boston Fertility Clinic – Boston, MA

CCRM Boston Fertility Clinic is the fourth facility in Massachusetts on the list and sits at No. 56 in the overall ranking.

Like the New York City location on this list, the Boston clinic is one of more than a dozen CCRM facilities across the U.S. and Canada. CCRM Boston Fertility Clinic provides egg donation, embryo and egg cryopreservation and gestational carrier services. According to the CDC’s ART data, the clinic had 1,626 total cycles in 2021, resulting in 445 pregnancies, 404 deliveries and 414 infants born.

On the Statista survey, CCRM Boston received a positive peer assessment on overall nursing staffing and a solid ART metrics performance.

CCRM Boston’s website boasts over 2,000 five-star patient reviews across its network of clinics.

Aaron K. Styer, a reproductive endocrinologist, founding partner and co-medical director of CCRM Boston, told Newsweek that the key to the clinic’s success is its ability to “customize emotional support, clinical testing and treatments and laboratory protocols to a patient’s unique personal and medical profile.”

“This is driven by our patient-centered and collaborative care approach that begins with listening to our patients’ perspective of their journey and their future goals,” Styer told Newsweek over email.

When discussing features offered at CCRM Boston, Styer noted the interactive online and in-person educational platforms for patients, “robust” telemedicine visit options for patient convenience and “time efficient and convenient” in-clinic and remote testing options, including the CCRM One Day Work Up.

He also pointed to the clinic’s “best in class” lab technology and safety protocols for egg freezing, IVF, pre-implantation genetic testing, LGBTQ family building and third-party reproduction services, like donor egg IVF and gestational surrogacy.

“All of our team members strive to provide the most seamless balance of clinical care, state-of-the-art technology, exemplary customer service, and enthusiastic support to ensure the most successful journey,” Styer said.

12. RMA Long Island IVF – Melville, NY

Rounding out our list is RMA Long Island IVF, the fifth-best clinic in New York state and the 57th in the country.

RMA Long Island IVF has several locations across Nassau and Suffolk counties, including in Melville, East Patchogue, Garden City, West Islip, Lake Success and Stony Brook.

In 2021, the clinic had 2,246 total cycles, resulting in 550 pregnancies, 471 deliveries and 480 infants born.

The clinic offers services from evaluation, conception and preservation. Services include female and male fertility testing, genetic testing and counseling, IUI, IVF, egg and sperm donor conception, surrogacy, fertility surgery, egg and embryo freezing, sperm banking, oncofertility and medical fertility preservation and LGBTQ family building.

RMA Long Island IVF also offers patient education, wellness and mental health resources, financial and insurance help.
