A tiny Yorkshire terrier has been praised after it somehow managed to defend a piece of meat about the same size as itself from hungry great Dane Max.

In a viral video uploaded to TikTok by Slovakia-based user Lenka Dugasová, known as 10lenka06, on December 25 showed the 15-year-old Yorkie eating a slab of meat as large as itself while Max looked on.

When Max started to get a bit close to the meat to take a sniff, the tiny terrier made it clear who the treat belonged to.

The terrier continued to bark at the great Dane, leading it to give up any attempt to take even a nibble from the meat.

Newsweek has contacted Dugasová for comment via TikTok.

According to the U.K.-based Dog’s Trust charity, there are several things dog owners can do to prevent their pets from resource guarding which include:

  • Preparing some tasty treats for your dog, ideally, something your pet really likes.
  • Gently and quietly drop the extra treats on the ground near your dog as they’re finishing their dinner then walk away.
  • Repeat this and, over time, progress to dropping the treats during their meal and closer to their bowl.
  • Progress to dropping food into your dog’s empty bowl.

“Being consistent and always swapping items will help dogs learn to share without being worried,” the charity said.

“If you need to take something from your dog, swap it for something else that your dog considers to be equally or even more valuable. Offer your dog the better item before trying to take what they have away.”

What Commenters Said

Newsweek found the vast majority of people who commented on the photo praised the little terrier, while others said the dogs seemed unaware of their sizes.

Keiron Rattray said: “The fact [is] if [the] big man wanted to he could eat the wee (little) Yorkshire terrier in one.”

Arifi was born and added: “They both don’t know how big they are.”

By Zuzand commented: “It’s like humans, the smallest bark the most.”

While alesrandra2 posted: “This shows that sometimes we think we have no chance, and when we try it may turn out that we were wrong.”

And diana00 said: “I’m the boss.”
