Another day means another Wordle puzzle but if you’re struggling Newsweek has some hints for you.

Thankfully, playing Wordle isn’t always difficult, which is part of its appeal. The daily puzzle requires users to solve a mystery five-letter word by typing in their guess and solving it in six attempts or fewer.

It can be played on the Wordle app or website and then, through a process of elimination, players can work out the word with the help of a color-coded tile system. A green tile indicates a correct letter; yellow shows the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot; and gray tells the player that the letter does not appear in the word at all.

Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics who teaches at the University of Reading in the U.K., previously provided some useful advice for Wordle players in an interview with Newsweek.

“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen,” Aslan said. “Starting off with words that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful.

“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for instance, may not be the best choice. As you get more feedback after a few guesses, users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow down or eliminate some words that they might be thinking.”

The most popular starting letter is S, followed by C. If you’re stuck, The New York Times Wordle bot recommends using “Slate” as a starting word for players in normal mode and “Dealt” in hard mode, as these choices contain letters that most commonly appear in Wordle answers.

According to Wordsrated, it takes users four guesses on average to find the answer. So, if you manage to solve the puzzle in three tries or fewer, you’re better than the average player.
