It’s a new week, which means another seven days of Wordle puzzles to test your brain.

Since Josh Wardle uploaded the game to the web in October 2021, over 1,000 daily puzzles have been solved by players around the globe. With enough possible answers in the game’s word bank to last until late 2027, fans still have plenty more puzzles to solve yet.

Still, have you ever wondered why you can only solve one Wordle a day? It’s because Wardle didn’t want fans to binge the game, giving Wordle some longevity.

“I built a prototype of Wordle in 2013. Functionally it’s almost the same as the one we have now, with the biggest difference being that the older version allowed endless play. In other words, you could just keep on going until you had your fill,” the Brooklyn-based software engineer told Newsweek in 2022.

“I found that being able to play endlessly just meant that you would eventually lose interest. You would play for like 20 minutes, and then get bored and want to move on to something else.”

The decision to impose a limit was inspired by The New York Times game Spelling Bee, which also allows users to solve only one puzzle every 24 hours.

“If you limit how much people can play, then you keep them hooked without taking over their lives,” he continued.

“It’s also interesting because this [notion] runs counter to a lot of what you expect from mobile games. The assumption is that they’re supposed to keep you engaged at all times, but most people can solve a Wordle puzzle in about five minutes and then forget about it.”

Still, whether you’re new to Wordle, or you’ve been playing since the beginning, those daily puzzles can be a challenge. If you need a hand solving today’s brainteaser, Newsweek has put together a few clues to help you out.
