The game was invented by Josh Wardle, a New York-based software engineer, during the coronavirus lockdown in 2020. He decided to release Wordle to the general public in October 2021, and the game soon developed a passionate following, with some hardcore fans sharing their results and tips on social media every day.
Wordle became so popular that the game was purchased by The New York Times for an undisclosed low seven-figure sum in January 2022, though it remained free to play.
Since Wardle uploaded the game to the internet, over 1,000 daily puzzles have been solved by players around the globe. With enough possible answers in the game’s word bank to last until late 2027, fans still have plenty more puzzles to solve.

If you’ve ever wondered why you can only solve one Wordle a day, Wardle previously explained that he didn’t want fans to binge on the game, giving it some longevity.
“I built a prototype of Wordle in 2013. Functionally it’s almost the same as the one we have now, with the biggest difference being that the older version allowed endless play. In other words, you could just keep on going until you had your fill,” Wardle told Newsweek in 2022.
“I found that being able to play endlessly just meant that you would eventually lose interest. You would play for like 20 minutes, and then get bored and want to move on to something else.”
He was inspired to impose a limit by The New York Times game Spelling Bee, which also allows users to solve only one puzzle every 24 hours.
Wardle added: “If you limit how much people can play, then you keep them hooked without taking over their lives.”

According to Merriam-Webster, facet is defined as “any of the definable aspects that make up a subject (as of contemplation) or an object (as of consideration) e.g. Each facet of the problem requires careful attention.”
It is also defined as “a smooth flat circumscribed anatomical surface (as of a bone).”
