If you’re one of the millions of players still addicted to Wordle, you’ll know the daily puzzles can really test your brain.

Created by Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle, the word game became an overnight sensation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although Wardle designed it as a couple’s activity to play with his crossword-loving partner, he realized fellow-puzzle nerds might enjoy Wordle.

He uploaded the game to the web in October 2021, and by January 2022, Wordle had over 2 million players.

“Wordle” is displayed on a cell phone screen. Even the game’s creator, Josh Wardle, admits to finding the daily puzzles difficult.

Despite its popularity, regular players will know the game is far from easy. Even Wardle admits to struggling with the daily puzzles, usually needing four or five attempts to find the answer.

“I’m afraid I’m not really the best,” he told Newsweek in January 2022, shortly after the game went viral. “[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”

Wardle curated the original list of 2,315 possible answers, but this has never given him an advantage. Initially, the answers were randomly generated. However, The New York Times purchased the game in January 2022, assigning an editor to manage the selection process.

“When I designed the game, it was for me and my partner to enjoy, so I made sure that all of the entries were randomized,” he explained. “In other words, I don’t actually know what tomorrow’s word is going to be, which means that I can take part like everybody else.”

After adding Wordle to its roster of word-puzzle games, The New York Times also removed a few options from the word bank for being either offensive, outdated or for using a non-U.S. spelling. Although this reduced the potential answers down to 2,309, there are still enough choices to keep Wordle going until October 2027.

If you’re struggling to come up with today’s answer, we’ve put together a few hints to help you out.
