Being bested by today’s Wordle puzzle? Don’t worry, because Newsweek is here to help.

More than two years since it first became a viral sensation and Wordle is still hugely popular. The word puzzle game was first created by Josh Wardle in 2013, but was discarded after his friends were unimpressed by the prototype.

However, the Brooklyn-based software engineer revisited Wordle during the COVID-19 pandemic, perfecting the game as a gift for his crossword-loving partner, Palek Shah. He uploaded Wordle to the web, going from 91 players to over 2 million in just three months.

Impressed by the game’s success, The New York Times purchased Wordle for a seven-figure sum, adding the daily brainteasers to its roster of beloved word puzzle games.

But what is the secret to Wordle’s success? According to Wardle, it’s the five letter and six guesses format, which makes the game just the right level of challenging.

“There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it,” Wardle told Newsweek in January 2022. “That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed.

“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”

Still, Wardle admits to not being the best player, usually needing four or five tries to get the answer.

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts,” he said.
