If, like many others, your day isn’t complete without a challenging Wordle brainteaser, Newsweek has provided some tips to help you on your way.

For the uninitiated, the daily game challenges players to guess a five-letter word within six attempts or less using a process of elimination style tactic. A color-coded tile system lets players know if they’re on the right track or not.

A green tile signifies a correct letter in the right position, a yellow tile means that letter appears in the day’s word but is in the wrong spot, and a gray tile shows that letter does not appear in the day’s word at all.

New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle built a prototype of Wordle in 2013, before working on completing development of the daily puzzle during COVID-19 lockdowns. He then hosted the game on a public website.

Following its debut in October 2021, Wordle exploded from 90 users on November 1 of that year to 300,000 on January 2, 2022, according to figures by Statista. The New York Times purchased Wordle in January 2022.

Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics at the University of Reading in the U.K., gave some tips on how to improve your chances of solving the daily puzzle.

“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting letter chosen,” Aslan told Newsweek. “Starting off with letters that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful.”

Should today’s Wordle have you stumped, Newsweek has put together some clues to help get you over the line. However, be warned: the answer is a little further down this article, so scroll with caution.
