If you’ve never played Wordle before, Newsweek is here to help you play along.

The word-based game became a global phenomenon when it went public in 2021. It was invented in 2013 by Josh Wardle, a New York-based software engineer, but he later tweaked the word game for his puzzle-loving partner to play during the coronavirus lockdowns.

Following its public debut, Wordle exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021, to 300,000 on January 2, 2022, according to figures by Statista. The New York Times eventually purchased the game for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Even as its creator, Wardle isn’t afraid to acknowledge that he’s not the best at solving the puzzles, unlike his partner, who often figures out the answer quickly.

“Well, I did create Wordle and I’m not very good at it, so there’s your answer! I’m afraid I’m not really the best,” Wardle told Newsweek in 2022 when asked about his skill as a player.

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning,” he said. “She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”

The game’s objective is to figure out a five-letter word every day in six guesses. The fewer guesses you make, the better but if you guess them all wrong, your winning streak will end. When players type in the answer they think it could be, the letters will turn green if they’re correct and in the right position, yellow if it’s the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn’t in the day’s word at all.

If you want to try and maintain your winning streak, there are some easy tips to follow that will help. Start with a word that has a mix of common vowels and consonants, remember that the answer might repeat the same letter and try not to use guesses that include letters you’ve already eliminated. Thankfully there’s no racing against the clock with Wordle so if you’re struggling to get to the answer, you can always come back to it later in the day.
