Wordle is back with another brainteaser today, and the immensely popular word game is approaching a huge milestone.

Next week, Wordle will issue its 1,000th puzzle, with dedicated daily players probably wondering if they have managed to keep a streak going since the game was first released during the coronavirus pandemic in 2021.

Created by British software engineer Josh Wardle, the game became an instant smash hit throughout the pandemic, giving folks a well-needed distraction from the stress of lockdowns. It became so popular that, in early 2022, it was bought by The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

If you’ve played before, you know the drill. But if you haven’t, it’s easy to learn. The objective is to guess the daily five-letter word in as few attempts as possible. The game presents a new word every 24 hours, granting players six chances to guess the correct answer accurately.

When a letter is correctly placed, it transforms into a green tile. If a letter is part of the correct answer but occupies an incorrect position, it turns yellow. If a letter is not present in the word at all, the corresponding tile goes gray.

Wardle previously told Newsweek the reasoning behind the game’s rules. “There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it. That might seem arbitrary, but with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed,” Wardle said.

“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time, people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”
