Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce may have missed the 2024 Golden Globes, but one fan thinks he would have had something to say about the awkward joke shot at Taylor Swift if he attended.

Swift and Kelce both had a busy Sunday, with the “Cruel Summer” singer attending the awards ceremony as a nominee in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category for The Eras Tour and Kelce having a game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The scheduling conflict meant both had to go it alone—and maybe that was for the best, considering an awkward joke aimed at Swift at the show by host Jo Koy may not have gone down well with Kelce, according to social media users.

“As you know, we came on after a football doubleheader,” Koy said, noting the TV schedule for the day. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift. I swear, there’s just more to go to.”

The camera panned to Swift, who looked unamused and sipped her drink. Koy later apologized for the joke that failed to land.

There has been some controversy around how much attention is given to Swift when she attends Kelce’s games. The two, who romance rumors started circulating around last summer, appear to be equally supportive of each other; Kelce flew down to Argentina for one of Swift’s Eras Tour shows last year, as well.

Social media user @dearjohnno1stan on X, formerly Twitter, shared the viral video taken from an NFL game suggesting Kelce would have said what he did in the clip to Koy: “Know your role and shut your mouth, you jabroni.”

The video captioned “If Travis Kelce was there last night,” has been viewed over 174,400 times, reshared over 380 times, and liked over 5,000 times by social media users at the time of writing.

Newsweek reached out to Travis Kelce’s publicist via email for comment.

One social media user said that if Kelce was present, the joke would’ve been cut from Koy’s script: “Let’s be honest if he was there…the joke would’ve been skipped.”

A listener of Kelce’s podcast said: “I hope it gets brought up on New Heights this week and he calls him a jabroni.”

Another person commented: “God help #JoKoy had Travis been there.”

Referencing another famous awards incident, an onlooker said: “I wish he was [there] and pulled a Will Smith!”

At the 2022 Oscars, actor Will Smith jumped out of his seat and smacked host Chris Rock across the face onstage after he made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s appearance.

Despite Koy’s joke and losing out to losing out to Barbie, photos from the evening appeared to show Swift having a good time.
