Trump Supporters Told He’s Suspending His Campaign

Donald Trump’s supporters were told he is ending his presidential campaign in a fundraising email on Monday.

An email was sent out to the former president’s supporters with the subject line “I’m suspending my campaign” on Monday, according to posts to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, from Axios’ Andrew Slender and The New York Times’ Nick Corasaniti.

However, the body of the email revealed it was simply an April Fools’ Day joke, rather than an actual suspension of his presidential campaign.

“Just kidding – Happy April Fools Day!” the email reads.

Trump is set to face off against President Joe Biden in the November presidential election, as both candidates have won enough delegates in their respective primaries to secure their party’s presidential nominations.

Polls show a tight race, with several showing Trump with a narrow lead. But he is expected to have a tumultuous summer, potentially facing multiple criminal trials, one of which is set to begin later in April, ahead of the election.

A similar message was posted to WinRed, a Republican fundraising website, by the Trump Save America Joint Fundraising Committee, a PAC supporting the former president’s campaign.

“DID YOU REALLY THINK I’D SUSPEND MY CAMPAIGN? HAPPY APRIL FOOLS DAY! I will never stop fighting for the American people. I WILL NEVER SURRENDER!” the page reads, continuing to ask recipients to donate at least $5 to Trump’s campaign.

Trump’s campaign has not publicly commented on the fundraising email.

Newsweek reached out to Trump’s campaign for comment via email.

The email comes as some Republicans voice concerns about the Trump campaign’s finances, as Biden has outraised him in recent months.

Biden raised nearly $127 million to compete against Trump by the end of February, with about $71 million cash on hand, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) data. Last week, he raised an additional $25 million at a New York City fundraiser. Trump had raised only about $99 million in the period, with about $33.5 million in cash on hand, according to FEC data.

The fundraising email drew ridicule from some Democrats, including former congressional candidate Christopher Hale, who wrote, “The man hasn’t campaigned in over two weeks, so it tracks.”

It comes after he posted a separate holiday message to his social media platform Truth Social for Easter.

“HAPPY EASTER TO ALL, INCLUDING CROOKED AND CORRUPT PROSECUTORS AND JUDGES THAT ARE DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO INTERFERE WITH THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 2024, AND PUT ME IN PRISON, INCLUDING THOSE MANY PEOPLE THAT I COMPLETELY & TOTALLY DESPISE BECAUSE THEY WANT TO DESTROY AMERICA, A NOW FAILING NATION,” he wrote.
