A video of Lucy, the 20-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier greeting her owner Karen has recently received a lot of attention on TikTok. The footage shows an empty stairway before Lucy makes an appearance.
Karen can be heard making a high-pitched sound that is somewhat replicated by her dog. She then says “I love you too” while Lucy excitedly wags her tail and barks back.
The popular video shared to a page dedicated to the dog @lucythe20yroldstaffy has amassed 56,200 views and over 4,000 likes.

“She always greets me like that—even when I just pop to the shop,” Karen told Newsweek.
According to the on-screen text, Karen had only been gone for 5 minutes and still received a warm welcome back.
Many people have commented on the video and they can’t believe Lucy’s age.
One user said: “How lucky are you! 20 years old! Wow.”
Another praised: “Lucy looks phenomenal doesn’t look a day older than 10. She has a mommy who cared for her well.”
“Senior dogs have such a distinctive bark, and I love it!” pointed out another user.
According to The American Kennel Club, Staffordshire terriers’ life expectancy is usually 12 to 16 years. Smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger ones. Chihuahuas live from 15 to 17 years whereas a Great Dane’s life expectancy is 8 to 10 years.
“Scientists are not entirely sure why this occurs, although there is speculation that larger dogs develop age-related diseases sooner than smaller dogs,” states the AKC website. One reason for this could be that larger breeds mature from puppies to adults at a faster rate, increasing the likelihood of abnormal cell growth and cancer death.
The AKC advises owners to carefully select a responsible breeder who has met their breed’s health requirements in order to detect any harmful diseases. This is due to the fact that genetics frequently play a role in a dog’s longevity. Of course, this isn’t always possible, as many owners adopt dogs from animal shelters and followed the “adopt don’t shop” movement. In this case, determining whether the canine has any issues would be difficult.
