A dachshund staged a protest of sorts after his owner tried to take him out for a walk in less than ideal weather conditions.

Otto the dog was clearly in no mood to walk the streets of his native Birmingham in the U.K. in the freezing cold. As a result, the daring dachshund decided to vote with his paws by not moving much at all.

Footage of the standoff was shared to TikTok by his owner Chris, who told followers that these stalemates have become a “daily occurrence” during the cold winter months.

“He really hates the cold,” Chris told Newsweek. “If I put a coat on him I can get him out the door but as soon as his feet touch the wet floor or a floor that had been rained on he will refuse to move and wants to go home.”

Taking your dog for a walk is an essential part of pet ownership that provides a boost to your four-legged friend’s overall well-being. What’s often underappreciated, however, is the benefits the practice has for their human companions.

In 2019, a study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that dog owners were four times more likely to meet the physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes per week than those who did not have a canine.

Chris thinks much of Otto’s stubbornness stems from his breed. “Dachshunds are known to be stubborn and he definitely lives up to the name,” he said.

But while some dog owners might throw in the towel in the face of this kind of resistance, he usually has a Plan B ready in any instance where Otto refuses to budge.

“I don’t pick him up—I usually try and coax him because most of the time he does need to go on a walk and go to the toilet,” he said. “A lot of the time I have to end up walking back towards the house and he will happily run back to the house. He gets faster.”

On this particular occasion, Chris was able to coax him out for a walk using treats. The problems only began when he ran out of those same treats.

Thankfully, he’s come up with another way to ensure Otto still gets plenty of exercise by channeling his true canine passion. “He loves playing with the ball. In fact he’s obsessed with them,” he said. “For Christmas I bought him a ball launcher.”

Though Otto might have refused to move this time, Chris appears confident that with a few more treats in his bag and winter only lasting a little while longer, Otto will be back pounding the pavement before long.
