Many baseball players dream of the day their manager sits them down and tells them they have been promoted to the major leagues.
It’s a tradition that dates back generations and continues to develop with the evolution of social media. Some managers are more to the point, others like to joke around first and some give off fatherly vibes who are proud of the men taking the next step in their career.
Here are a handful of rookies who had their moments captured by the team or spoke to reporters after it happened about how they received the news and who they called first.
Blaze Alexander, Diamondbacks
When Blaze Alexander found out that he was getting called up, he found out that he was also in the starting lineup. He got his first career hit, which scored the franchise-record 14th run in the third inning.
Hunter Stratton, Pirates
Grab a tissue because the Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Hunter Stratton needed them. Stratton became a first-time dad this week and then received the news that he made the Opening Day roster. His son Maverick must be so proud.
Jordan Leasure, White Sox
Jordan Leasure was fighting back tears when he called his mom and grandpa to tell them the news that he would be going with the team to Chicago for Opening Day.
Wyatt Langford, Rangers
It was expected that Wyatt Langford would make the Opening Day roster but seeing him receive the news is still thrilling. According to ESPN baseball reporter Buster Olney, Langford is going to be the game’s next big star.
Jared Jones, Pirates
Pittsburgh didn’t post an official video of Jared Jones in his meeting with manager Kevin Shelton but he did meet with the media after to describe the moment he received the news.
Jared Triolo, Pirates
Jared Triolo was a late-season call-up last year but made the Opening Day roster this spring. His meeting was short, sweet, and to the point but still exciting.
Forrest Wall, Braves
Forrest Wall’s minor league journey began in July 2014. Since then he has suited up for 10 clubs and has had more than 3,500 plate appearances. The years of hard work and determination finally paid off because he made Atlanta’s Opening Day roster.
Zack Short, Mets
In what could be one of the most emotional call-ups, Zack Short got the call moments after finding out that his grandmother died. As the tears rolled down his face, he took a moment to collect himself and then said his family was together when he told them the good news.
