Winter Storm Warnings for 9 States as ‘Heavy Snow’ Hits

Several states can expect heavy snow throughout Saturday and into Sunday as the National Weather Service (NWS) issues a slew of winter storm warnings.

Mostly northern states across the east and west of the country are under warnings from the NWS. They have been issued for six states: California, Iowa, Maine, Montana, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

New Yorkers can expect heavy mixed precipitation throughout Saturday and into Sunday, according to the latest NWS warnings. Southern Fulton, Montgomery and Southern Saratoga Counties are warned that, due to expected snowfall of around 1 inch per hour, roads may be icy and visibility will be reduced. In Northern Oneida and Southern Oneida counties, as much as 8 to 12 inches of snow can be expected this weekend.

In the Lake Western Mohawk Valley, Southern Adirondacks and the Lake George Saratoga region in eastern New York and southern Vermont, the NWS has warned of heavy mixed precipitation that could bring down tree limbs and cause power outages, as well as making road travel “very difficult.”

In Minnesota and Iowa, the NWS has said that light snow will develop Saturday night, with a heavier “main storm system” arriving in the Midwest on Sunday.

“A heavy band of snow will develop across northern Iowa Sunday morning, and lift up from the south. Snowfall rates of one inch per hour are likely, with two inches per hour possible,” the warning reads. “Winds will be out of the east at 25 to 35 mph, which will lead to very low visibility. Snow will become more widespread throughout the day on Sunday.”

Various “hazardous precipitation types” are expected throughout the day and evening in Maine, with the weather warning remaining in place until 6 a.m. EDT on Sunday. The NWS warns of snowfall ranging between 6 and 10 inches, with up to 15 inches possible in the Maine foothills. Snow sleet, freezing rain and ice accumulations are also expected, coupled with wind gusts of up to 30mph throughout the night. Power outages are expected in some areas

The warning covers large parts of Maine, including portions of south central, southwest, and western Maine and northern New Hampshire. Anyone traveling in Maine and New Hampshire is urged to prepare for “very dangerous” driving conditions. The NWS advises, if you must travel, to take “an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”

In the west, Californians in high elevations can expect anywhere from 1 to 18 inches of snow accompanied by wind gusts between 50 and 75 mph. Warnings are in place throughout Saturday and overnight into Sunday in the San Bernardino and Riverside County Mountains, San Diego County Mountains.

In West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada, the NWS warns that travel could be delayed on roads due to several inches of snow per hour and chain controls. With gusty winds also forecast, tree branches may be brought down from trees in the worst-affected areas.

North east in Montana, heavy snow conditions are also forecast in Blaine County, Fergus County, and the Bear Paws Mountains from 3 p.m. MDT on Saturday, continuing throughout the evening and into early on Sunday morning. In Carter, Custer, Fallon, and Northern Rosebud, as much as 8 inches of snowfall is possible throughout the evening, with winds of up to 40 mph expected to significantly reduce road visibility.
