One woman’s intrigue in what her fiancé was doing on his phone led to quite the surprise—a sweet, caring surprise at that.

A viral TikTok video posted by Mia and Waylon (@mianwaylon) revealed Waylon scrolling through a period tracking app to understand where Mia was in her menstruation cycle and how she might be feeling. The couple spoke to Newsweek about how this moment reflects their relationship and the care they share between them. Since it was posted, the video has received over 4.8 million views and 534,000 likes.

“POV: You look at your fiancé’s phone and this is what he’s doing,” Mia captioned the video. “He’s so cute.”

On Waylon’s phone was the app—presumably tailored for the partners of menstruating people—and its insights into how Mia might be feeling at that point in her cycle. Likelihood of pregnancy: low. That day’s “potential positive”: greater stamina. How she might feel that day: calm, with some fatigue.

“I was looking at Mia’s period tracking app because I have started to recognize which part of her cycle she’s in based on her mood,” Waylon, 21, said. “I wanted to see if I was correct.”

Mia, 21, said she was “a little confused” when she saw Waylon on the app.

“I knew he had the app but never knew he checked it and was super curious to know why,” she said. “I think we are just very in tune with each other’s emotions.”

Viewers who also have partners using a menstrual tracking app to understand their experiences chimed in. Some use the app to plan sweet surprises on days of pain, hormonal imbalances or fatigue. Others use it to understand the causes of these things in the first place.

“My man will randomly show up with chocolates and flowers and back rubs cause of this app,” @angelica.acrylics wrote.

“I started crying because he wanted to stray from our usual breakfast place and he instantly checked mine,” @nah.__.nah wrote.

“Mine has it on his phone too. I had no idea until he said ‘You’re crying cause you’re about to get your period,’ when I was crying over a dog video,” @stephxx63 wrote. “Tracks ovulation too because we’re trying [to get pregnant].”

While an app is a useful tool for people to be able to track their partners’ cycles, it’s not a must. Devoted partners have been doing it long before apps were an option. “My ex used to know my cycles better than me. No app needed. I have no idea how he did it,” @bittersweetcoconut wrote.

Mia said Waylon, since tracking her cycle, has tailored his care and accommodations to her moods and symptoms. Despite the methods used, commenters were in agreement that paying attention to menstruation cycles can help a relationship thrive by increasing empathy and understanding.

“There are many relationships that would be 100 percent better if partners would pay attention to a cycle,” @tedtabbytrigger wrote.
