Millions of people have watched a social media video showing the fascinating aftermath of accidentally smashing a bottle of red wine outside in the winter in Calgary, Canada.

January is usually the coldest month of the year, but TikTok user Meg (@life.of.megs) still didn’t expect the alcohol to instantly freeze on the ground.

If it wasn’t for the text layered over the video, you could mistake the footage for a crime scene. It says: “POV: you dropped a bottle of red wine on the front steps of your [apartment] building in Calgary when it’s -40 outside.”

The clip, shared on January, 15, has amassed 3.6 million views and over 253,000 likes.

In another video, Meg explains that she was feeling “extra generous” on that day and decided to purchase her favorite wine for the stranger.

That isn’t the only update posted, she also explains that she is moving out and the wine was purchased as a moving in gift for the person who is moving in. She states it took her 20 minutes to clean it up before her landlord arrived to inspect the property ahead of her departure.

She also states that the wine “froze within 30 seconds of dropping it.”

Not knowing that alcohol freezes, some users were shocked by the first video. BinWise, a liquor inventory software system, confirmed that all alcohol will freeze if it’s cold enough. The freezing point for wine is an average of 23 degrees Fahrenheit, and it would take around five hours for a regular bottle of wine to completely turn into ice in the freezer. The website also states that wine that has been frozen won’t be completely ruined, but that the taste is likely to change.

Beer can also freeze, but it’s best not to do this as it will not only ruin the quality, but it could explode. Alcohol like whiskey and vodka is unlikely to freeze in a conventional freezer, according to BinWise. The temperature must be -17 degrees Fahrenheit or below for the spirit to turn into ice.

So far, the video has received over 670 comments.

One user suggested: “Just drop a bottle of white wine on top it’ll cancel out.”

“Pro: wine slushy Con: shards of glass,” said another.

A third comment said: “That looks like a murder scene.”

A fourth said: “This is why I drink white.”

A woman previously spoke with Newsweek about her fight with alcoholism, which resulted in her consuming five bottles of wine every day. After giving up for good five years ago, she is now much happier and healthier.
