A woman has shared a snapshot on social media of the jaw-dropping card that accompanied the bunch of flowers she bought for her dad while he was in hospital following a heart attack.

Anne from Maryland took to Reddit posting under the handle u/refusetopoop, to share a picture of the card that ended up being sent to her father in Virginia.

“My dad had a heart attack on Monday and went to the hospital,” Anne told Newsweek. “I live in another state and wasn’t able to visit him in the hospital, so I figured I’d send him some flowers so he knows I’m thinking of him.”

Though we may be living in an increasingly digital world, physical cards are still much appreciated by Americans today. A 2023 survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Shutterfly found that two-thirds of Americans prefer physical cards during the holidays over a digital alternative.

Anne’s dad certainly ended up appreciating the card she sent him following his heart attack, though not necessarily for the way in which she might have hoped.

At first everything seemed to be normal enough. “I looked up a local florist, scrolled through and the all pink floral arrangement drew my eye,” Anne said.

Selecting the occasion for the delivery as “get well/pick-me-up” from a drop-down menu before inputting the address, Anne made sure to include a heartfelt message that read:

“Hi Dad, sorry about the heart attack. I love you so much. I got you pink flowers cause I like pink and you can think about me when you look at them.”

The card Anne’s father received from the florist. It was not what they had expected.

Anne even paid an extra $5 to get a “full size card” before completing her purchase. At first, she thought everything had gone off without a hitch. She received a text from her dad saying: “Thank you for the flowers and your sweet note. I love you so much.”

However, it was only when she saw the picture of the flowers and the card that had been sent with them that she realized something had gone very wrong. While the flowers were all present and correct, her father had instead been sent a card featuring a picture of an empty park bench next to a tree by a lake with writing that reads: “Departed from our lives…”

The message inside the card continued: “…but never from our hearts.” Clearly a very grave mistake had been made. Thankfully, it wasn’t all bad. Anne confirmed that her dad did receive the heartfelt note she sent, albeit on a separate card.

More importantly, the whole debacle left him stitches. Anne received a text from her stepmom telling her it “actually had him laughing which hasn’t happened since he’s been here of course.” That’s largely why she ended up sharing it on social media.

“We all thought it was super funny and it brought some much needed laughter to all of us, so it all worked out for the best,” Anne said.

The good news above all else is that her dad is now doing much better.

“He was lucky they caught it when they did and everyone worked quickly to get him through surgery and he is expected to make a full recovery,” she said, adding that her dad has had surgery and, after a few days in the hospital, is back home.
