Women with curly hair may tell you that having curls is amazing—about one day a week. While their curls may dazzle immediately after a wash and reset, keeping them presentable the other six days can be a struggle.

Each wash day, many curly girls are faced with a decision: to blow-dry, or not to blow-dry. On the rare occasions the decision to keep their natural curls intact pays off, their curly dreams can disappear in the morning, when their hair loses its bounce and starts to resemble a bird’s nest.

One person who understands that struggle is Jada Fevzi, who posted a video on TikTok under the handle @jadafevzi comparing her styled curls and her morning curls.

In the video, which has received more than 4.3 million views and 500,000 likes, Fevzi showed off her styled curls, worn in a half-up-half-down style.

The clip then cuts to her in bed the next morning, where she is seen taking her hair, now in a bun on top of her head, out of a hair tie. The curls, now matted and undefined, stick out in all directions.

Fevzi’s morning hair may have been the result of her not putting her curls in the correct style overnight, damaging and disrupting the curls rather than protecting them.

How to Protect Your Curls at Night

There are many changes you can make to keep your hair happy and healthy overnight, saving yourself from a situation like Fevzi’s.

Wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf, bonnet, or other product to protect your curls from your pillow throughout the night. These materials are softer on hair, meaning it is less prone to breakage, and keeps the hair tangle-free.

If you don’t have something suitable at hand, gather your hair on top of your head while flipping it upside down, securing it loosely with a scrunchie to create a pineapple. Try not to use a classic hair tie, or to tie it too tight, as this can leave indents in the hair.

What Do the Comments Say?

In the comments section of Fevzi’s TikTok post, users discussed similar struggles, with one writing, “If water didn’t exist us curly girls would be doomed.”

“I have to wet my hair. every. day,” another added.

Others shared tips on how to preserve curls overnight.

“Braid your hair at night! Wearing it in a bun or wearing it down while you’re sleeping can damage your curls,” one user wrote.

Another said, “No hair up, and use silk pillowcases.”
