Woman Surprises Boyfriend With New Short Haircut, Reaction Deserves a Medal

It’s an ongoing joke that men are awful at noticing when women make a change to their look, whether it’s a new pair of boots, a different makeup style, or most commonly, a new hairstyle.

Waiting for reactions to a new look can be an exciting and nerve-racking time, especially if you haven’t told anyone you’re going for a chop. Many of us walk out of the salon asking ourselves questions like: “Will anyone notice? Should I have gone for a darker color? Was it really the best idea to cut a full fringe the day after breaking up with my boyfriend?” (The answer to the last one is always no).

For some, the excitement of showing off a fresh look outweighs the nerves, especially when it comes to seeing how your loved ones react, which is why one woman decided to secretly film her boyfriend’s reaction to share on TikTok.

The viral video, posted by Robyn Hamman, racked up 1.5 million views since it was posted on March 30, with 171,000 likes from viewers obsessed with boyfriend Allister deBlocq’s sweet reaction after she “chopped off all my hair.”

In the video, her unsuspecting boyfriend is seen entering their home, where Hamman is waiting for him, with the on-screen text reading: “I just chopped off all my hair and wanted to surprise my boyfriend. Here’s how it went.” After he gives her a hug and kiss hello, he steps away, which is when she takes down her claw clip, revealing her new look.

The boyfriend notices almost instantly, stopping in his tracks before heading back to get a better view, giving her a second hug as he shows appreciation for her new style.

Speaking to Newsweek, Hamman, from Johannesburg, South Africa, opened up about her attachment to her hair, and shared that: “I had been wanting to cut my hair for a long time before we even met but I was so scared due to the fact that I thought all my beauty was held in my hair and my femininity would get lost and I wouldn’t be attractive anymore.

“But one day I called up my hairdresser and decided to go for it. I told nobody, and I chopped it all off. It was so liberating, and the best part was; I still felt beautiful.”

The day of the big chop coincided with the couple’s nine-month anniversary, as Hamman said: “It was a big deal…I recorded his reaction as a joke because I knew he would react well, and then it blew up – I never expected that.

“The reaction was just something I was excited to show him – I knew he’d love me even if I shaved my head. I just wanted to surprise him. With his reaction, I felt so loved and special! It also confirmed to me that my hair isn’t who I am.”
