Woman taken to hospital in critical condition, two pets die in fire

A woman was taken to hospital in critical condition and two pets died after an apartment fire broke out at 170 Booth St. on Sunday evening.

One woman was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, an Ottawa paramedic spokesperson said Sunday night.

Two dogs and a cat were also found unconscious inside the unit. Firefighters managed to revive one dog.

The first call came in at about 7 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services said, with a monitoring company reporting active fire alarms, and that was followed by several 911 calls. When crews arrived at the five-storey residential highrise two minutes later, they confirmed heavy, black smoke coming from the fourth floor at the front of the building.

The door of the unit had to be breached, and when firefighters went inside they were met with zero-visibility conditions, the fire service said. An unconscious woman was found during a search of the apartment and was taken down to the lobby, and at 7:19 it was confirmed that she had regained a pulse.

The fire was located in a bedroom where the woman was found, Ottawa fire said, and was deemed under control at 7:19. The blaze was contained to the one apartment.

An investigator was sent to the scene.
