You’ve probably heard that it’s cats that choose their owners and not otherwise. While this may lack scientific proof, it was the case for a cat owner who was chosen by her two new kittens months after her senior cat died.

In a viral clip shared in November on TikTok under the username ladywiththerubberchicken, the woman says that after hearing meows outside her front door she rushed to open it, only to find one of the kittens sitting outside crying for attention as her brother waited across the road.

A caption shared with the post explains: “The ‘cat distribution system’ chose us four months after losing my last cat of nearly 20 years and it was basically her twin. Of course, there were two.”

The poster told Newsweek that the kittens, whom she ended up adopting, are “completely crazy” but absolutely adore her 6-year-old daughter, whom they first bonded with.

She said: “Sometime over [the] summer we noticed a very pregnant stray cat around our neighborhood. We think the kittens were born sometime in August. It wasn’t until September that we were able to catch them. We were told by other neighbors that they were feeding the kittens, but we never saw any of them ourselves at first.”

The poster’s family believes that the tabby seen in the video was hiding under their camper for a day too before they managed to befriend him, although he wouldn’t let them get close.

“Then one day we had doors and windows open because it was so nice out. That’s when I heard little tiny meows coming from our front door,” the poster said said, “So I started recording. She ran off as soon as I opened the door. That night our 6-year-old daughter heard her again, so we let her sit on our porch.

“Sure enough, the kitten climbed up the steps and sat next to our kid! My daughter then said to me, ‘She chose me.’ However, we weren’t able to get close enough to catch her. The next day she came back. Meowing at the front door. This time I watched her run across the street to another kitten. This one was a fluffy black one.”

The family was scared the two kittens would get hit by a car, so they decided to come up with a plan to take them to safety.

“Our daughter came up with the trap idea, with a cat crate we had for our old cat that just passed away,” she said. “Only four months prior, our old gray tabby named Libi had died. She was 18. Within minutes, the kitten ran into the crate for food and our daughter caught her.

“It took my husband another four hours to catch the black fluffy kitten because he was terrified of us. But now they are family. They love our daughter and are so gentle with her.”

Cats can be very selective with people, but there’s a way to become your feline’s favorite if you’re not the chosen one already. Three things you should do to gain a cat’s love are feeding them, playing with them and using positive reinforcement, according to pet wellness experts at the website Rover.

“When your cat does something nice, give them a treat or gentle pets. And when they need alone time, give them some space. Both attention and space can reinforce your relationship,” the site says.

The TikTOk video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 5.3 million views and 793,000 likes.

One user, Tracie Patrick, commented: “Her brother sent her out to make friends and find them homes.”
