Given the current rental market situation, downsizing is becoming a common option among Americans, who are building smaller homes to save on costs. But just because properties are smaller, doesn’t mean they can’t be practical.
A woman from San Francisco has gone viral after turning her studio apartment in the city centre into a one-bedroom flat with just one simple move—although not everyone is convinced.
In a video shared on TikTok, under the username citychateau, the woman can be seen moving her bed into her large closet, helped by her dad, after one of her TikTok followers gave her a space-saving idea.
A caption shared along with the clip in January explains: “The people have spoken, we are officially moving the bed into the closet. For those that don’t know, I live in a studio apartment in the city with a massive closet. Is it a one bedroom? Still up for debate! But we see major potential.”

The poster can be heard saying to her dad in the video: “It’s a really great setup, why did I have the bed so close to the door? It was right up against the door and I couldn’t open it. Why did I do that? There really is a lot of space I here! Thank you the people of TikTok!” before getting confused about what a hex wrench is.
Sliding boxes under the relocated bed, she adds: “That’s called optimal storage. OK, I am Harry Potter! It’s cute I like it.” And she asks followers: “Should I keep this setup?? What do we think?”
The video quickly went viral on TikTok—it has so far received over 17.7 million views and 970,000 likes on the platform.
One user, jenna, commented: “I feel like the head of the bed should the other way tho.” And Dee Dee said: “I don’t think you know what a studio apartment is…” Talia Rose added: “Don’t let your landlord see this. That studio rent will be one bedroom rent real quick.”
There is a considerable difference in rent between one-bedroom apartments and studio flats. The average for a studio apartment in San Francisco is currently around $2,721, and for a one-bed it is $3,415.
Another TikTok user, Amanda, wrote: “Don’t know what your budget is like, but I’d totally try replacing the bifold for something with a window in it. Also, get a CO2 monitor in there please!!”
And Cam said: “Bedrooms legally have to have a window in most states I think, so makes sense that they labeled it a closet. Love closet bed vibes, I prefer to coziness.”
