Wordle took the world by storm when it was released to the public back in October 2021. Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle created a prototype for the word puzzle game in 2013 but perfected it during the COVID-19 pandemic as a gift for his crossword-loving partner. He didn’t realize the online sensation it would soon become.
In November 2021, Wordle had 91 players. By January 2022, that figure had risen to 2 million. Impressed with Wordle‘s success, The New York Times purchased the game for a “seven-figure sum,” adding it to its roster of brainteasers.
More than two years later, the game still has an estimated 250,000 daily players, according to the website Gitnux.

A major part of Wordle‘s appeal is its simplicity. Players have to work out a mystery five-letter word in six guesses or fewer, and then a color-coded tile system lets you know if you’re on the right track.
A green tile means the letter is correct, while yellow tells you the letter appears in the word but is just in the wrong spot, and a gray tile shows that the letter does not appear in the word at all.
Speaking to Newsweek in January 2022, Wardle explained why he decided on only five-letter words being used for the game.
“There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it. That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed,” he said.
“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”

The answer to today’s Wordle is “shank.”
According to Merriam-Webster, the noun definition is “the part of the leg between the knee and the ankle in humans or the corresponding part in various other vertebrates” and “a straight narrow usually essential part of an object: such as the straight part of a nail or pin.”
The verb can be used in a sentence as “shanked; shanking; shanks.” When used as a transitive verb it can be defined as: “to hit (a golf ball or shot) with the extreme heel of the club so that the ball goes off in an unintended direction.”
