It’s December 1, which means we’re almost through another year of Wordle puzzles.

Over two years since the word puzzle game became a viral sensation and Wordle is still hugely popular. Created by Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle, the pastime was created as a gift for his partner during lockdown.

However, Wardle’s partner wasn’t the only one bored during the COVID-19 pandemic, and within a month of uploading the game online, Wordle had over 2 million users. It was purchased by The New York Times just four months after launch, and although Wardle kept shtum about the exact amount, admitted it was in the “low seven figures.”

Nevertheless, Wordle’s overnight success stunned its maker, who felt he had a “responsibility to the players.”

“I get emails from people who say things like ‘hey, we can’t see our parents due to Covid at the moment but we share our Wordle results each day,'” Wardle told The Guardian in January 2022. “During this weird situation it’s a way for people to connect in a low effort, low friction way.”

According to a survey by word search tool Wordfinder, players spend an average of 12 minutes a day playing Wordle—that amounts to three days a year.

Polling 1,000 Wordle users of all ages, the website discovered that Baby Boomers—those born between 1946 and 1964—were the best players, getting the answer right 81 percent of the time. Although, they also played the game more than any other demographic, giving them an edge.

Generation X also seemed to love Wordle, with 48 percent of respondents born between 1965 and 1980. 11 to 26-year-olds, also known as Generation Z, play Wordle the least, making up only 21 percent of respondents.
