Monday has rolled around again, so why not start your working week with today’s Wordle puzzle?

Created by British software engineer Josh Wardle, the game became an instant hit throughout the pandemic, giving folks a well-needed distraction from the stress of lockdowns.

Wordle was first released to the public in October 2021, and rapidly exploded from 90 users on November 1 of that year to 300,000 on January 2, 2022, according to figures by Statista. It became so popular that in January 2022 it was bought by The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

One of the reasons the word game is so popular is because it’s relatively easy to play. Each day, players get six attempts to guess a new, five-letter word and within these six guesses, they use a designated color system to find out which letters are present in that day’s chosen word.

If a Wordle user guesses a letter that’s in the right place, that tile will turn green. If the letter appears in the word, but not in the place the user has guessed it, it will turn yellow. If the letter does not appear in the word at all, the tile will turn gray.

While the game’s format isn’t difficult, that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to figure out the answer.

Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics who teaches at the University of Reading in the U.K., previously provided some useful advice for Wordle players in an interview with Newsweek.

“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen,” Aslan said. “Starting off with words that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful.

“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for instance, may not be the best choice. As you get more feedback after a few guesses, users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow down or eliminate some words that they might be thinking.”
