When Wordle first went public in October 2021 it had about 90 players, but that soon changed and it became a viral hit.
More than two years later, Wordle still has an estimated 250,000 daily players, according to the website Gitnux.
It was invented by Welsh-born engineer Josh Wardle, who sold it to The New York Times for “an undisclosed price in the low seven figures.”
Since then, the NYT has made some tweaks to the game, including removing some words from the database that could be seen as offensive. It also removed the cache of historical Wordle games online.

It also did a deep dive into some interesting trends and playing styles of the daily word puzzle by analyzing 515 million Wordle games, finding that one in every 250 games is guessed on the first attempt, which is too high a number to be explained simply by chance.
“This is much more often than you’d expect if you just left things to chance, although not necessarily every case is outright cheating,” said writers Josh Katz and Aatish Bhatia for The New York Times. “Some may be using a new window to make additional guesses after failing to solve the puzzle in six tries. Some may be re-entering a solution they found on a different device to maintain a streak, or to test a technical issue. Others may have had the answer spoiled, or, yes, may have looked it up.”
