Need a hand solving today’s Wordle? Newsweek is here to help.

For more than two years, players have been addicted to Wordle’s daily brainteasers. When creator Josh Wardle uploaded the word-puzzle game to the web in October 2021, he had no idea it would become a viral sensation.

The Brooklyn-based software engineer originally created Wordle as a gift for his crossword-loving partner during lockdown, based on a prototype he’d experimented with in 2013.

However, he quickly realized that puzzle nerds might enjoy the game. Within a few months of posting Wordle online, it had over 2 million players, with The New York Times snapping the game up for a seven-figure sum in January 2022.

But what’s the secret to Wordle’s success? According to Wardle, it’s the five-letter, six-guesses format, which he describes as “the ideal sweet spot.”

“There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it,” he told Newsweek in 2022. “That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed.

“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”

Nevertheless, Wardle didn’t want fans getting addicted to the game, which is why players can only solve one puzzle a day.

“With the prototype version of Wordle, I found that being able to play endlessly just meant that you would eventually lose interest,” he explained. “You would play for like 20 minutes, and then get bored and want to move on to something else.

“But if you limit how much people can play, then you keep them hooked without taking over their lives. It’s also interesting because this [notion] runs counter to a lot of what you expect from mobile games. The assumption is that they’re supposed to keep you engaged at all times, but most people can solve a Wordle puzzle in about five minutes and then forget about it.”
