Wordle is back with yet another brain teaser this Saturday—and Newsweek is on hand to make sure you succeed.

Created by British software engineer Josh Wardle, the word-guessing game became an instant hit during the coronavirus pandemic when it first launched in 2021, giving folks worldwide a well-needed distraction from the stress of lockdowns. Its popularity boomed so much that, in early 2022, the game was bought by The New York Times from Wardle for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

The objective of Wordle is to guess the daily five-letter word in as few attempts as possible. The game generates a new word every 24 hours, with players afforded six chances to guess the correct answer accurately.

When a letter is placed in the right spot, it transforms into a green tile. If a letter makes up part of the correct answer but occupies an incorrect position, it turns yellow. If a letter is not present in the word at all, the corresponding tile goes gray.

Wordle is only available once per day, with the brain teaser refreshing every 24 hours. Wardle previously explained to Newsweek that the game is limited to one puzzle per day to prevent fatigue with its format—a strategy that has clearly worked given that the game launched around three years ago.

“With the prototype version of Wordle, I found that being able to play endlessly just meant that you would eventually lose interest,” he explained. “You would play for like 20 minutes, and then get bored and want to move on to something else.

“But if you limit how much people can play, then you keep them hooked without taking over their lives. It’s also interesting because this [notion] runs counter to a lot of what you expect from mobile games. The assumption is that they’re supposed to keep you engaged at all times, but most people can solve a Wordle puzzle in about five minutes and then forget about it.”
