It’s finally here, the last Wordle of the year, thankfully Newsweek is here to help you solve today’s brainteaser so you can go back to celebrating the incoming new year.

Wordle started with a player base of a few dozen after New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle made the game public in 2021.

The English-language game rapidly accumulated more new players and by January 2 there were 300,000 unique users.

Wordle’s success led The New York Times to step in a purchase it later that month for an undisclosed seven-figure fee. The game remains free to play via the publication’s website.

Part of Wordle’s success can be explained by its simple pick-up-and-play gameplay loop. Players are tasked with solving a five-letter word within six attempts or fewer.

Should a player guess the correct letter in the right place, the tile will turn green. It will turn yellow if it is correct but in the wrong place and it will go gray if the letter is not in the word at all.

Joel C. Wallenberg, a senior lecturer in language at the University of York in the U.K., previously told Newsweek the popularity of Wordle reflects interest in languages.

“Language always seems to be fascinating to people. This is perhaps because producing and understanding language is a fantastically complex process, and we are only aware of the tiniest bit of that process while it’s going on; most of what we do when we speak, we do unconsciously,” he said.

“But it may be that people have an inkling that they’re doing something very involved and impressive when they speak, even if they don’t know the details or why it should be that way.

“Language games poke at how conscious—or unconscious—we are of our own linguistic processes, and maybe give us a little more insight into them than we had before. That might be one reason why humans, maybe universally, have always invented and enjoyed language games.”

Here are some tips and hints to solve today’s Wordle puzzle. The solution will be shared at the end of the article, so be careful how far you scroll if you want to figure it out on your own.
