Due to their hunting instincts, all cats enjoy chasing birds. But what happens when the seemingly helpless prey decides enough is enough?

A cat owner has left internet users in stitches after sharing a video of her pet, Gus, begging to be let inside while being chased by the birds he has terrorized for years. This all happens in front of the other feline, who can be seen sat on a chair, enjoying the show.

In the hilarious clip, shared on TikTok on Wednesday, under the username @gusfromcraigslist, the black cat can be seen meowing relentlessly at the door, waiting for someone to let him in, while a couple of birds keep flying menacingly over his head. A caption reads: “When the birds you have terrorized for years finally stand up for themselves. About time [to be honest].”

If you have a cat at home or know someone who has one, you have probably noticed how much they love interacting with birds. But what is the cause of this behavior?

The cat-food database site Catological says that most felines adore chasing small animals like birds or mice because of the instincts they inherited from their ancestors. Sometimes, you may even notice them chirping or chattering when there is potential prey in their eyeline.

Even though nowadays cats may eat better food than their humans do, in nature their ancestors had to hunt, and birds were among their favorite prey.

“Whenever they spot a possible prey, they become predators, whether it’s just for playtime or for survival. Even if your pet is completely stiff and isn’t stalking the bird by walking around the window or the TV, it could still be thinking about hunting it,” the Catological website says.

The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 926,000 views and more than 220,000 likes on the platform.

One user, Britt, commented: “My childhood cat killed a mocking bird baby and the momma came back every single year and would attack my cat out of our tree.”

Evianart26 posted: “Lol [laugh out loud] not the other black and white cat watching peacefully from the chair.”

Sassy Jacks added: “My dog used to terrorize the blue jays. When he passed they just sat on the lawn like where did he go.”
