A TikTok video that captures the slow introduction that was orchestrated between a cat and his new feline sibling has tugged at heartstrings across the internet.

The viral video, which has been viewed more than 7.7 million times since it was shared to the social media platform on March 11 by user @nala_meets_world, saw the male ginger cat sitting patiently behind a bedroom door—his eagerness to meet his new feline sibling visible in the fact that he stationed himself there for long periods of time.

In the video’s text overly, @nala_meets_world wrote that the cat’s new sibling, a young kitten, was being looked after behind the closed door. Viewers watched as the pair met each other for the very first time at the end of the moving clip that had been filmed three years ago.

“He sat here in front of this door for weeks,” @nala_meets_world wrote. “He knew something was up before any of the other pets. He was waiting to meet her.”

Viewers were shown the male cat bringing toys to the bedroom door, excited to finally play with his new sibling. The pair had to resort to lurching their paws at one another’s through the tiny space under the door before they were properly introduced.

“He bought her his favorite toys so that they could play together, but usually they just used their paws,” @nala_meets_world added. “She was always waiting by the door for him too.”

Viewers were then offered a glimpse at the female kitten, who was also waiting patiently behind her own side of the door.

How Should You Introduce Cats to Your Cat?

The cats’ owner may have done the right thing by offering the two excited felines a slow and measured introduction.

The United Kingdom-based animal welfare charity Cats Protection says that advance planning is always needed before a new cat or kitten is introduced to a household that already has a pet cat, or else the pair may struggle to see eye to eye in the long run.

This is even more prevalent in dynamics like the one shared in the TikTok post where the incoming cat looks to be a different age to the existing cat. The charity advises owners to let the cats meet in stages before they get fully acquainted to avoid scraps over territory or toys.

“Before introducing the cats physically, introduce them to each other’s scent. Swap scents by stroking each cat with a clean, soft cloth and dabbing it around your home and furniture or leaving the cloth in the cat’s environment to sniff when the cat is ready to investigate,” the charity wrote on its website. “You can progress to allowing them to see each other, but not able to touch or meet one another. If possible, place a glass or mesh door between the cats and allow each cat to approach or hide as they choose.”

It added: “Don’t attempt a face-to-face introduction until the cats either ignore each other or show positive signs such as attempting to groom or rub heads through the divider.”
