A cat owner has left the internet in stitches after sharing a clip of his biggest expense walking up to him and demanding play time while he worries about their bills.

In a post shared on TikTok on Tuesday under the username ellie_thetabby, the ginger cat can be seen walking into her owner’s room and jumping on his bed, demanding to play fetch on a stick, which he describes as an “interesting” game.

A caption shared along with the post says: “When you’re stressed about bills and your biggest one casually comes over with their favorite bell on a stick. She likes to play fetch with the stick, it’s interesting.”

The poster told Newsweek that Ellie is four months old and he only adopted her from a shelter a month ago.

He said: “She has the sweetest personality, super affectionate, glued to my hip and loves belly rubs. I have no other pets.”

Having a pet comes with some expenses, and according to Forbes, Americans spent over $136.8 billion on their pets in 2022. Forbes estimate that cat owners spend about $310 per year on food, $253 in veterinary care, and about $50 on toys for their furbabies.

Each year, 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet “Shelter Watch Report” found.

Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.

The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 1.3 million views and 128,200 likes on the platform.

One user, Savannah, commented: “My cat does this, brings me her little bell toy, or she’ll just sit next to it, look up at me, and meow until I play with her.”

Iamlex310 said: “So do all our cats just casually walk around with their toy sticks?? Mine has a octopus with feathers.”

Anne Marie added: “I used to play fetch with my cat using crumpled up paper and he would just carry it in his little mouth all proud after he caught it. I loved him so much.”
