‘Never Prayed in His Life’

Mary Trump, the estranged niece of Donald Trump, mocked her uncle’s new venture of helping peddle a version of the Bible, saying on Tuesday, “He’s never prayed in his life.”

The former president shared a video message for Holy Week on Tuesday to his Truth Social account, announcing that he was endorsing a “God Bless the USA Bible,” which costs $59.99.

The Bible is named after the Lee Greenwood song that is often played at Trump’s campaign events, and according to the website selling the product, includes a handwritten chorus to “God Bless the U.S.A.,” the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence and the Pledge of Allegiance.

“It’s very important and very important to me,” Trump, the presumptive 2024 GOP presidential nominee, said in the video. “I want to have a lot of people have it. You have to have it for your heart, for your soul.”

Mary Trump, an author and psychologist who frequently criticizes her uncle, responded to the former president’s video announcement in a post to X, formerly Twitter, Tuesday evening, saying that her uncle has “never prayed” and that “If that were a real bible, it would burst into a ball of flame.”

Newsweek reached out to Trump’s campaign via email for comment late Tuesday night.

The former president has previously polled favorably among White evangelical voters, and often points to his Christian faith while campaigning. His video message on Tuesday comes a day after the former president shared a post to his Truth Social account that compared Trump to Jesus, in which an unidentified person wrote to him that it was “ironic that Christ walked through His greatest persecution the very week they are trying to steal your property from you.”

According to the website selling the Bible endorsed by Trump, it is only offered in the King James version, and is “not political and has nothing to do with any political campaign.”

“GodBlessTheUSABible.com uses Donald J. Trump’s name, likeness and image under paid license from CIC Ventures LLC, which license may be terminated or revoked according to its terms,” according to the site.

Several accounts mocked Trump’s video message about the Bible version, including the X account Republicans Against Trump, which wrote in a post Tuesday, “One day after he compared himself to Jesus Christ, Trump is now selling a $60 ‘Trump endorsed’ Bible. Grifter gonna grift.”

The Lincoln Project, a political group founded by anti-Trump Republicans, also posted to X, “Unrepentant grifter Trump is so desperate for cash that he’s selling a ‘God Bless the USA’ Bible. How much money do you think Trump gets off each sale?”

According to a person familiar with the matter who spoke with The New York Times, Trump is getting royalties from purchases but is not selling the Bible himself.
