Happy holidays, Wordle players, Newsweek is here to help you solve today’s brainteaser so you can get back to napping on the sofa.

New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle created the puzzle game as a way to keep his crossword-loving partner entertained during the COVID-19 lockdown. It quickly became a viral hit after Wardle decided to host Wordle on a public website in 2021, going from 90 users on November 1 of that year to 300,000 on January 2, 2022.

The game proved to be such a success that The New York Times purchased it in January 2022 for an undisclosed low seven-figure fee. The game is still popular today and remains free to play via the publication’s website.

To play, a user must work out the five-letter word of the day. Guessing the correct letter will cause that tile to turn green. The letter will become yellow if it appears in the word, but not where the user has placed it. The tile will turn gray if the letter does not appear in the word at all.

Joel C. Wallenberg, a senior lecturer in language at the University of York in the U.K., previously told Newsweek the popularity of Wordle reflects ongoing interest in languages.

“Language always seems to be fascinating to people. This is perhaps because producing and understanding language is a fantastically complex process, and we are only aware of the tiniest bit of that process while it’s going on; most of what we do when we speak, we do unconsciously,” he said.

“But it may be that people have an inkling that they’re doing something very involved and impressive when they speak, even if they don’t know the details or why it should be that way.

“Language games poke at how conscious—or unconscious—we are of our own linguistic processes, and maybe give us a little more insight into them than we had before. That might be one reason why humans, maybe universally, have always invented and enjoyed language games.”

Here are some useful tips for today’s Wordle puzzle. Note that the solution will be disclosed at the end of this article, so proceed with caution if you wish to figure it out on your own.

Wordle #920 Answer for Tuesday, December 26

Today’s Wordle answer is “Phone.”

According to Merriam-Webster, the noun definition of phone is: “a device by which sound (such as speech) is converted into electrical impulses and transmitted (as by wire or radio waves) to one or more specific receivers.”

The verb definition is “phoned” and “phoning.”

Did you guess correctly? If you didn’t, you’re not alone. Wardle admitted to Newsweek that he needed several guesses to crack each game.

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning,” Wardle said. “She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”
