Two of the city’s main signs of summer — the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend and the Great Glebe Garage Sale — are on this weekend.

More than 31,000 participants are expected for Race Weekend events on the streets of Ottawa and Gatineau Saturday and Sunday.

Organizers have set a fundraising target of $1.5 million and, as of Thursday morning’s tote board, more than $913,711 has already been raised.

The races begin on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Ottawa Kids Marathon. The 2K, 5K and 10K races also take place on Saturday.

The full marathon begins Sunday at 7 a.m., while the half-marathon begins at 9 a.m.

All races start at Ottawa City Hall.

The weather, always a question mark in this area, is looking fabulous: Bright sunshine and highs of about 28 C are forecast. In fact, participants would be wise to include hats, sunscreen and other sun protection in their kits.

Meanwhile, if shopping is more your thing, the Great Glebe Garage Sale is also back on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event runs, rain or shine, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., but bargain-hunters are often out far earlier scouting for treasures.

The sale, which goes back to 1986, is held in the area bounded by Bronson Avenue, Highway 417 and the Rideau Canal.

The event runs rain or shine from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m, but bargain-hunters are often out far earlier scouting for treasures.

The sale also serves as a fundraiser for the Ottawa Food Bank, with sellers asked to contribute 10 per cent of their profits. The Ottawa Food Bank will be on Bank Street in front of Metro McKeen taking cash donations and non-perishable food items.

More than 30 Glebe merchants will also be holding a sidewalk sale.
